But what if that first domino was the start of something much bigger? The domino effect is how a small amount of potential energy can be transferred from one domino to another, creating a chain reaction that knocks down thousands of dominoes.
Before we know it, the entire line is falling. This is because the dominoes have inertia, a tendency to resist movement when no outside force is pushing them.
When a domino falls, however, much of its potential energy can turn into kinetic energy, the energy of motion. This kinetic energy is then transmitted to the next domino, which gives it the push it needs to fall too.
This process continues, and the chain of dominoes continues to grow, until all the dominoes have been tipped over. This is what creates the domino effect, which is why it’s sometimes called the “domino principle.”
